Landlocked salmon? They turn that colorful 😮
Yes they do!
May have to make a trip to the columbia, been fishing in the salt for kings in marine area 11 3x this month and only got a couple sub-legal jacks to the boat and had to put them back. A limit of sockeye sounds amazing about now.
gibbs up here in canada calls the raindrop ones dogtail dodgers
Yeah I like their dodgers a lot
When you say you use maggots to fish with. Do you use real maggots ? Or fake ones like gulp maggots. Thank you for your time. Also. Any good locations for sockeye salmon fishing for a first timer with a boat. I am in portland.
Gulp Maggots. You can troll for Sockeye along the Washington shore from the barges to I-5 bridge
@@spiltmilt thank you!!
thanks for the info! enjoy your catch.
This channel is way too good to have fewer than 100k subscribers.
Fishing for my first Walleye this weekend. Got a few patters I am going to try.
Awesome good luck!
It’s different seeing you reel fast. I’m use to Koke control from you😎
Have you tried bottom walkers??
All the time but jigging is more effective in this location
@@spiltmilt figured that’s why you were throwing plastics I’d do same but the area I fish usually have a faster current
Thanks for the great videos. I’ve learned a great deal.
Great to hear!
I've been impatiently awaiting this video, ever since you posted a photo!!! That was earlier today! What took you so long! 😅😂 Now I'll return to the video I've waited oh so long for.
when you are running a wedding ring lure behind a flasher, what is you recommended distance between the two? Much appreciated...
6-8”
@@spiltmilt Thank You for Your time and expertise....
Nasty worm dirt! I love it.
I have not fished walleye in a few years maybe I should . The walleye in our part of the Columbia from the border to Castlegar has some really big walleye I have seen 8 lbs caught at were the Kootenay and Columbia join at Castlegar. Most of the guys fish there in late August. There is a limit of 16 and 2 day possession of 32. In our partof BC they are considered invasive species so thye want you to catch as many as possible. On another note I just came back from my Cariboo kokanee trip and it was fantasic. Average weight was 3 1/2 lbs that I caught and I got one at 4 1/2 lbs. These were weighed at the resort not by me. I took home my limit. I am not sure if you ever fished this Cariboo lake, you have talked about Deka,Bridge,Sulporous, Horse but never Ruth. It is stocked each year with 20,000 diploid kokanee. They fight better than rainbow. You must pay attention to the sol-lunar tables to have any success on the lake other wise you just get rainbows.
Yes they are considered invasive here and many folks operate under the delusion that wiping them out will somehow restore salmon runs. The truth is they are one of the best tasting inland fish and I'd rather have them than mushy hatchery raised trout. As for the Cariboo I'm headed back soon with Ruth, Horse, and Bridge in my sights this year if the weather plays nice.
@@spiltmilt Tyler, when you go to Ruth , fish 25 ft down in 40 feet water, use pink hoochie on 10 in leader to dogger. fish at the north end either troll a box start just north of the last island go straight to the north shore till you hit the 40 ft depth turn west follow the 40 ft contour then angle south east keeping the shoal which is 150 ft from sore to your right , angle towards the tip of the island take a heading to the white rock on the east shoreline .When even with the tip of the island turn north again and repeat. Good luck.
right on! nice video. That kokanee at 7:27 is amazing man. congratulations. Nothing tops that feeling.
Woo, first one here. :) Related to your last video on the sockeye run, will you be putting out a video on when and where to go for Brewster/Wenatchee sockeye? I'm about 4 hours drive from either one and would hate to come up empty handed.
I'll be putting out new videos for sure but my old content answers all those questions too
I know this is an older video, but I've been looking for good options for hooks to convert some of my crankbaits to single. This finally showed up as a suggested video and I'm glad it did
Glad I could help!
Thank you. Salmon fishing in Michigan since 1970, I’m finding your channel very entertaining and informative. Good stuff!😊
Is this a fishery accessible from the shore?
People commonly plunk for them from shore on the lower river but haven't seen it done up here.
@@spiltmilt Thanks!
That's a very heavy kayak
#accurate
He fish working, We watching, get to fish working,. Talking to my self.,
What is the name that kayak?
I'm sure I will get some hate for this, but it is 100% true. If WA was truly concerned about salmon numbers they would find a way to regulate the tribes. Any time I have been out on the coast, white man is allowed to keep 2, and only use barbless hooks blah blah blah. meanwhile the tribes are on the columbia cascade netting the river. nothing makes it past their nets.
Sure some tribes are bad actors. Around here we wouldn’t have much of a King, Coho, or Sockeye fishery without the restoration and hatchery work that the tribes do. Their hatcheries use better technology than the WDFW and USFWS ones.
was thinking and going of hitting it this weekend. glad you guys were able to get out
And I had to fish the Kenai to catch Sockeye that big!!
Wow, amazing fish!!! What are your thoughts on why they get so big and a lake like Lake Stevens their tiny? I know it has something to do with the quality of their food supply, just wondering what would make it better
It’s pretty simple. Stevens, as most Washington lakes are, is over stocked.
@spiltmilt yeah, was wondering that too. Thanks!
Get out there and get the last ones so they go exstinkt faster, they should close all fishing for 10 years to let them recover crab, halibut, lingcod, cod, Solmon, let the catch pike, walleye trout ,bass, I was a commercial fisherman in Alaska in the late 70s n 80s I saw the depletion of species of fish n crab but no body believes a fisherman ,just the biologist
Sockeye runs are breaking records. It’s a success story so not sure what your deal is
Everyone wants to say "wow look at how many fish we have, let's raise the limits." How dumb, a 4 fish limit is awesome. Let's not get greedy and ensure fish for future runs. Yes, the numbers are great, but let's protect this incredible fishery.
It’s a 5 mixed trout/kokanee limit which I think is fine especially considering the size of the fish
Which one is Best???, Which brand?
We're stacking chrome blue backs down river. That's where to fish them.
Or I can wait a week and just catch them in my backyard
50k yesterday! I'm chompin at the bit. Weather looks favorable to keep the columbia cool as well. Im seriously holding my breath to see what counts we get for the next few days as we just might give the record a run for its money this year.
Is the plastic you repaired with same as the kayak. I think polyurethane
Same plastic. HDPE
Have you thought about getting a better camera to record your takedowns? Love your videos but I’ve noticed they can be quite blurry when highlighting the takes. What are you currently running?
I record with a top of the line DJI Osmo 4 in 4k. The reason it might look fuzzy to you is that RUclips is probably only playing it in 720 or 1080 for you because of a slow connection or default setting on your end
Quick question , I’m staying in Bridgeport in July to fish sockeye, are there any issues I should be aware of running my prop boat from there down to brewster ? 20 ft. Aluminum outboard ?
No just stay in the main channel and avoid cutting between the islands
@@spiltmilt Thank you I’ll be looking for ya would be great to introduce myself and say hi
Just what i was looking for SUBD
Really appreciate this type of video. As someone who hasn’t been doing this a long time and trying to learn, it adds a lot of context as to why WDFW does what they do. As opposed to listening to everyone grumble when things don’t go as they would like. Not to mention helps target the fish.
Baker lake is forecasted 60k this year, glad to see the numbers going up all over
Thank you for the information!
If only British Columbia would pull their heads out of their rears and do something about our vastly declined stocks.....they just gave 5 more years for open net pen polluting greed
These are BC stock (Osoyoos).
@@spiltmilt we haven't had a Fraser River opening for anything but pinks for years.....and even the pinks it's a limited time
Sure I understand that but the First Nations and BC Fisheries are doing good work on the Okanogan runs for Sockeye
@spiltmilt as someone who grew up here and has fished the Fraser for 41 years it's just disheartening how they didn't. Listen and do anything 10 to 15 years ago
Wow! Haven’t seen one of your videos in a long time. You slimmed down. 👍🏼 Health is key to longevity in life. Keep it up! Thanks for the info and great content.
Yes I count calories and took up distance running. Shed about 45 to 50 lbs.
@@spiltmilt That is amazing! Keep up the great work.
